Chorzów
Chorzów - the mere sound of this word makes one immediately think of at least a few good qualities of this city regardless of where you are from. Chorzów is widely associated with Provincial Culture and Leisure Park, with Silesian Stadium, as well as the Planetarium and Open Air Heritage Museum. Additionally, the city is memorable for its Entertainment Park, Silesian Zoological Gardens or the Teatr Rozrywki with its diverse and interesting repertoire, not mention KS Ruch Chorzów - a Polish football champion many times in history. Finally, for many Chorzów stands for Wolności High Street which is visited by thousands of people a day.
Those with great insight into the city's history know very well that Chorzów has been a meaningful place in the lives of both historical and contemporary celebrities including Juliusz Ligoń - social activist and poet, Karol Miarka - activist and publisher, Kurt Adler - a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Teodor E. Kalide and Rajnhold T. Domin - sculptors, Franz Waxmann - a film score composer and a two time Oscar winner. Chorzów is also the birthplace of Ryszard Riedel - the legendary lead singer of "Dżem" blues band, Hanna Schygulla - an actress, and for the renowned sports figures Halina Richter-Górecka, Gerard Cieślik, Antoni Piechniczek and Krzysztof Warzycha. Wojciech Kuczok - a "Nike" Literature Prize Winner in 2004 also lives in Chorzów.
Chorzów also takes prides itself on two Blessed Priests - Józef Czempiel, the head priest of Hajduki parish of the Assumption of Our Lady, and Ludwik Mzyk - a second world war martyr beatified with others by John Paul II.
